The Sewing Circle

2021

Acrylic and Wool on Canvas. 23.4 x 33.1 Inches

The term ‘sewing circle’ used by Marlene Dietrich referred to closeted lesbian and bisexual film actresses and their relationships during Hollywood’s golden age. The colours and shapes of the painting are influenced by a handmade knitted cardigan, the pinks, oranges and white bearing resemblance to the lesbian pride flag.

Whereas lesbians are often oversexualised, wool carries a feeling a of tenderness and familial love representative of the domestic lifestyle. Lesbianism within the lesbian gaze, a reclamation of feminine identity and domesticity.
